Dear Sunnyside Families,
Welcome back to school!
I hope your summer was filled with opportunities to rest, explore, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy the many things that make summer special. As we get ready to welcome our students back, there is a wonderful sense of excitement throughout Sunnyside. Our classrooms are coming back to life, our staff are preparing for the year ahead, and we are looking forward to seeing our students again!
A special welcome to our new Sunnyside families. We are so glad you are joining our community. Whether this is your first year at Sunnyside or you are returning to familiar faces and spaces, we want every student and family to feel that they belong here.
The beginning of a school year can bring many different feelings for children—and for adults, too! There may be excitement, anticipation, curiosity, and perhaps a few butterflies. These feelings are all part of beginning something new. Our first priority will be helping students feel safe, welcomed, connected, and ready to learn. Over the first few days and weeks, teachers will spend time building relationships, establishing routines, getting to know their students, and creating positive classroom communities.
First Day of School – Monday, August 31
On Monday morning, our staff will be outside beginning at 8:50 a.m. to welcome students and families. Teachers will be wearing yellow visibility vests and will be easy to spot.
- At 8:55 a.m., teachers and EAs will meet students and families outside. Staff will be available to help families find their classrooms and answer questions. If you are unsure where to go, please look for a staff member and we will be happy to help.
- At 9:06 a.m., students will enter the school with their teacher. Once students have entered, families are welcome to head home and begin their day knowing that their children are in good hands.
If your child arrives after 9:06 a.m., please have them enter through the front doors and sign in at the office.
A Few Helpful Reminders
Students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 will have school supplies provided by the school. Families are asked to provide:
- A backpack
- Indoor shoes
- Lunch and snacks
- A refillable water bottle, if desired
- Weather-appropriate clothing, as students will be outside throughout the school year

Staying Connected
We value our partnership with families and know that students are most successful when home and school work together. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if there is information that would help us better understand and support your child. Our staff are committed to creating a learning environment where every student can learn, grow, contribute, and feel a strong sense of belonging.
We are also grateful for the many ways our families contribute to the life of Sunnyside. Our School Council, Fundraising Society, volunteers and community partnerships all help make Sunnyside the special place that it is. We look forward to connecting with many of you throughout the year.
There will be lots happening at Sunnyside this year, and we are excited to share those experiences with you. We are looking forward to a year filled with learning, friendship, curiosity, creativity, and joy.
Most importantly, we are looking forward to seeing our students.
