Our Sunnyside School Beliefs:
We are connected to each other.
We are connected to our community.
We are connected to the land.
Unique Points
- We are a warm, caring, respectful environment that supports diversity and fosters creative thinking. Our small size promotes a unique family atmosphere.
- Close proximity to downtown Calgary means we have easy access to Prince’s Island, the Glenbow Museum, City Hall, Jubilee Auditorium, Science Centre, the Calgary Zoo and the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts, all of which are used to enrich student’s learning.
- Four naturalized areas highlight our outdoor space. Riverstone Park, Prairie Patch, and Aspen Woodland were developed between 1998 and 2002 and represent the flora and geography of Alberta. Our Sunnyside Learning Circle officially opened in September 2022. Children are frequently observed in these areas involved in creative play activities inspired by their surroundings.
- A large creative playground was constructed in June 2004.
- We have a private Before and After School Care Program and a Pre-Kindergarten Program for 3- and 4-year-olds providing additional family supports in our building.
Our Philosophy
Sunnyside School is a small, intimate community learning environment that supports the whole child.
Teachers, as mentors, provide students with rich, diverse learning tasks that are student-centered and interest-based. Our teachers honour all aspects of each child's needs: personal, emotional, intellectual, physical and social.
Students learn 21st-century life skills, such as collaboration, problem solving, and global and self awareness. The arts, outdoors and technology are all embedded in scaffolded, cross-curricular learning.
Leadership concepts and language are heard throughout the building as students participate in multi-aged activities and fun, school-wide events. This provides students a positive, fulfilling experience during their years at Sunnyside.
Our School's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
We are committed to acknowledging and supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 94 Calls to Action specific to education. Our school, along with all CBE schools, made a Truth and Reconciliation Commitment to Action, on June 21, we renewed our commitment.

School Development Plan
Each year, our school prepares a development plan with input from teachers, school staff, students and parents. We review many sources of data, including report cards, provincial achievement test results and school surveys. Based on this information, we create our plan identifying targeted areas for growth. Our school development plan is not meant to represent all of the work that takes place in our school, but rather it focuses on specific areas for improvement.

School Improvement Results Report
Our school also prepares a results plan, which looks at our previous school year. It shows our students’ achievement and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes as set out by the CBE and Alberta Education, outlines some of the highlights of our school development plan and gives an overview of our school. You can look on the CBE website for system-wide results.
