Access to the School

Exterior doors are locked during the daytime to ensure the safety of our students, staff and volunteers. Staff greet students at the doors between 8:30 and 8:40AM.  At all other times, please access the school through the front entrance. Everyone is required to check in at the office before proceeding to any other areas in the school.

Leaving During the School Day

For the safety of our students, we have a “Sign-out Register” when a student is leaving the school premises during instructional school time. The student must be signed out in the main office by the adult who is picking them up.

If you would like to pick your child up early for an appointment, please email Sunnyside@cbe.ab.ca and let us know what time you are coming.  Please give us plenty of notice so we can try to get your child ready on time.

Releasing Children to Others

Unless a parent has made other arrangements with the school, children are released only to legal guardians. You are asked to discuss custody or other situations with the principal. It is essential that the school has the most recent copy of any legal custody agreement.

If your child is going to be picked up by someone who is not a legal guardian, please email Sunnyside@cbe.ab.ca with the following information:

  • Your child's name and class
  • The date
  • The name and phone number of the person who will be picking them up

We are not able to release your child without all of the above information.  Please send your email before 3:00PM so that office staff is able to let the teacher know who your child is going home with.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.

Video Surveillance Technology

The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.

Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.

This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.

Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.

For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
