Dear Sunnyside School Families,

This week is a short week, with students being off from Thursday, February 12 to Monday, February 16, 2026. Please continue to save the date for the bottle drive, fun lunch, school dance, and Pink Shirt Day later this month. The specific dates are listed at the bottom of this message.

Black History Month – February

February is Black History Month, a meaningful time for learning, reflection, and celebration. Throughout the month, Sunnyside students will engage in age-appropriate learning that honours Black excellence, history, contributions, and joy. We look forward to creating opportunities for thoughtful conversations and deeper understanding within our classrooms and school community.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate kindness, compassion, and the connections we share as a school community. While it is traditionally a day to express love, it is also a chance to spread goodwill and appreciation in both big and small ways.

Teachers will share the total number of students in their class to help ensure every child can be included. Please note that we are unable to share specific student names due to privacy legislation.

As a reminder, food and candy cannot be distributed at school. Families who wish to have their child share something with classmates are encouraged to send non-food items, such as erasers, pens, or fun pencils, which are always appreciated by students.

Lunar New Year

Tuesday, February 17, 2026

On February 17, many families and communities will celebrate Lunar New Year, an important cultural tradition observed across Canada and around the world. Sunnyside is proud of the rich diversity within our school, and this occasion provides a meaningful opportunity to continue fostering welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environments for all.

Also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year, Tết (celebrated by Vietnamese communities), and Seollal (celebrated by Korean communities), Lunar New Year carries deep cultural and historical significance and is one of the most widely celebrated events globally.

We look forward to welcoming the Year of the Horse through meaningful connections, learning experiences, and conversations with students and families.

Warmly,
Shannon Muir
Principal, Sunnyside School
