Sunnyside Weekly - September 15, 2023
Thank You!
Firstly, we want to extend a big THANK YOU to all parents who came to the Annual General Meeting of Sunnyside’s School Council last night. We are so lucky to have so many parents willing to get involved in our school. Thank you also to the parents who volunteered for formal roles in the School Council. If you missed the meeting last night, the next meeting will be on Thursday, October 5 at 6:00PM.
School-wide Art Project
This week all classes engaged in learning and creating through the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds. Common themes were: taking risks in your learning, making your mark (expressing yourself and making a positive impact in the school and in the world). Families will be able to see the amazing work at the Open House this Thursday evening from 4:30 to 6:00PM!
Diversity and Inclusion
At Sunnyside, we are so proud to welcome a diverse group of learners to school every day! Diversity makes us stronger as we work to learn about each other and create strong classroom and school communities that are welcoming, caring, respectful and safe. Please see CBE’s website for information on how we create inclusive environments at schools: https://cbe.ab.ca/about-us/school-culture-and-environment/Pages/default.aspx
This week, we will recognize Treaty 7 Week and learn more about the Treaty and the history of the first peoples of our land. We will build on this knowledge next week for Truth and Reconciliation Week and all year long. We will also share our diversity by recognizing that this month is Culture Month in Alberta. At Sunnyside, we will engage in Culture Week the first week of October. More details will be shared soon.
Combined Classes
At Sunnyside, our students come to us with a broad range of abilities, educational experiences and interests. This year, we have organized all of our grade 1 to 6 classes in combined classes (two grades and one teacher). This allows us to balance class-sizes and distribute new students evenly.
You may be wondering how teachers can possibly teach 2 grades at one time! We are committed to meeting each student where they are at and providing learning experiences for each child to grow. Teachers collect assessment information about each student and then plan tasks to meet the outcomes of the Alberta Curriculum. In a combined class, the teachers may plan common tasks or similar tasks for all students in the class with different complexity for different grade levels or different tasks for different grades based on the curriculum. Students receive whole class and small group instruction and work independently and with their classmates. Assessment and report cards are based on the grade that the students are in. Our school values collaboration among teachers and teachers work together to plan learning tasks for the grades that they share.
