Dear Sunnyside School Families,
Tomorrow, Monday, January 27 you will have access to your child’s report card through your MyCBE account. If you need some support, please see the following LINK for instructions on how to view report cards.
“Research shows that when students receive meaningful feedback — rather than just a grade — they are better able to understand their strengths and areas for growth and are more likely to improve their performance.”— Hattie, J., & Timperley, H. (2007). The power of feedback. Review of Educational Research.
When having conversations with your child(ren) about report cards, discussing the comments portion can be more impactful. Some tips for speaking with your child about report cards include:
- Help your child understand that everyone has strengths and areas for improvement. To learn, we need to start with not knowing everything and having a growth mindset helps (ex. I don’t know this – yet.)
- Reinforce the idea that grades aren’t the only measure of success. Emphasize learning, progress, and effort over perfection. For example, “It’s okay not to get everything perfect right away. The important thing is that you’re trying and learning.”
- Celebrate successes, even small ones. Praise good effort, improvement, or areas where the child has done particularly well. This makes the report card a reason to be proud, reducing stress.
Some conversation starters about report cards are:
"What do you think went well this term?"
"Were there any subjects you really enjoyed?"
"Is there anything you found hard?" This gives the child a chance to reflect and opens the door for a deeper conversation about challenges and strengths.
“Do you have any goals for the next term?”
The report card is only one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. If you have any questions, please reach out to your classroom teacher to discuss learning, progress and next steps further.
Family Literacy Day highlights the significance of reading and participating in other literacy-focused activities together as a family. It takes place on January 27. For more information and inspiration, visit the following website: https://abclifeliteracy.ca/all-programs/family-literacy-day/
