Dear Sunnyside School Families

It was a true pleasure to welcome our students back to school! They returned with great enthusiasm, eager to share the wonderful experiences they had over the break. Overall, it was clear that they came back feeling rested, refreshed, and ready to dive into a new school term.

Provincial Assessments

January is a busy month for students and staff. All students in kindergarten to grade 3 will be participating in provincial assessments in literacy and numeracy throughout January. For more detailed information regarding these assessments, please see What are Universal Screeners .

Report Cards

Teachers are also preparing report cards, which you will be able to view on MyCBE January 27, 2025.

The kindergarten reporting structure for the 2024-25 school year is slightly different due to the number of instructional minutes:

  • Kindergarten teachers will report progress to parents/legal guardians via January and June report cards.
  • In January, progress in ELAL and Math will be communicated to parents/legal guardians via the report card.
  • In June, progress in all discipline areas will be communicated to parents/legal guardians via the report card.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for 2025-26 beings this Monday, January 13, 2025. Children must be 5 years old on December 31, 2025 to start Kindergarten this fall. More information is available on the CBE website: https://cbe.ab.ca/programs/kindergarten/Pages/default.aspx

Field Trips

We are excited to announce that our first off-site field trips will begin this week with a visit to City Hall, followed by swimming outings in February. Please be on the lookout for permission forms, which will be sent home in students' backpacks. We kindly ask that you return these forms at your earliest convenience.

As part of the swimming program, the City of Calgary requires that we submit swimming ability forms by mid-January, so your timely response is appreciated.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the School Council for their generous support, ensuring that these valuable experiences are available to all families at no cost.

Dog Waste Management

We would like to address an ongoing issue related to dog waste on our school grounds. While it is generally the school’s responsibility to maintain cleanliness, the situation has been more challenging this winter due to increased volume and the freezing and thawing of snow and ice. As a result, dog waste has become more prevalent, often appearing outside of school hours. To help resolve this, we have reached out to the city for assistance and requested their support for more frequent cleaning services.

Typically, dogs are not permitted on school property, including playgrounds, unless they are service animals or part of a designated program, such as therapy dogs. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and sanitation of our school environment for students. If you notice any violations of this policy or encounter issues with dogs on school grounds, we encourage you to report them to Calgary's 311. The more reports they receive, the more responsive they can be in addressing the issue.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in keeping our school clean and safe for all.
