Dear Sunnyside School Families
Who is on Strike?
You've received email communication from CBE regarding strike action for CUPE union members which will commence Monday, February 24, 2025. CUPE Local 40 represents approximately 800 dedicated employees—around 5% of the CBE workforce—whose roles are essential to the smooth operation of our schools. This includes cleaners, facility operators, heavy-duty mechanics, locksmiths, and those involved in snow removal, grounds maintenance, and many other vital tasks. How will this impact schools? See the following link for more information that will be updated regularly: labour action web page.
Ramadan and Fasting
Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, deep reflection, generosity and gratitude. It is expected to begin on February 28, 2025, and end on March 29 or 30, 2025. Fasting from eating and drinking will be observed by many students and staff and occurs from dawn to sunset. If you have a child at Sunnyside School that is fasting, please inform school staff so we can include them in the lunchroom games and activities that will occur during regular eating times.
Pink Shirt Day and Assembly
On February 26, our school will join millions of others in recognizing Pink Shirt Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion among students. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada when two high school students took a stand against bullying by wearing pink shirts to support a peer who was being bullied for wearing one. At our school, we encourage all students to wear pink as a symbol of their commitment to standing up against bullying and supporting one another. We will engage in meaningful conversations about kindness and empathy and encourage children to share their own experiences and thoughts through our social emotional learning of the week.
Grade 1,2 will be hosting an assembly for the rest of the school on Thursday, February at 11:00 for approximately 30 minutes. Families are welcome to join us. RSVP is not necessary but is always appreciated.
Lost and Found
There are several clothing items that students have misplaced. Despite several efforts to reunite them with their rightful owners, many items remain unclaimed. Please find some photos attached. If you recognize any items and would like to investigate further, please reach out to your classroom teacher. We will also have a lost and still lost display open during Conferences on March 20 and 21 for your convenience. Items that remain to be unclaimed will be donated to charity in April.
Warm regards,
Ms. Muir
