Dear Sunnyside School Families
Thank you to those that attended the school council meeting, where we discussed upcoming events and the 2024-25 School Development Plan.
School Goal 1: Enhance Literacy Achievement Through Focused Phonological Awareness and Phonics Instruction Based on data from Provincial Universal Screeners and Kindergarten AFRS, a significant portion of early-grade students are identified as at risk in literacy, particularly in phonological awareness and phonics. In response, our goal for the upcoming year is to improve student literacy by strengthening phonological awareness and phonics instruction, with a focus on supporting English Language Learners and addressing emerging learning gaps.
School Goal 2: Foster Positive Self-Regulation and Social-Emotional Skills
Our analysis of self-regulation data reveals a concerning decline in positive self-regulation skills as students transition from grades 4-6, particularly among girls. In response, our goal is to enhance students' social and emotional competencies, focusing on self-regulation, emotional control, problem-solving, and stress management. This will support both well-being, peer relationships and academic success with improved readiness for learning.

Casino Fundraiser – This Week!
Our Casino Fundraiser is taking place this Thursday and Friday, and we still need volunteers! This event is a fantastic way to support our school and help fund important programs and initiatives for our students.
We would love to have your help—whether it is you personally volunteering or coordinating the support of a family member or friend. Police clearance is not required.

Please note that the weekly messages will be sent on Sundays. You will receive a message Sunday, December 15 then the last message for 2024 will be sent on Friday, December 20. Then you will receive an update on Sunday, January 5th before we return to school on Monday, January 6.
