Dear Sunnyside School Families,
As we enjoy the longer days and warmer weather, many students are spending more time outdoors after school. With that in mind, I wanted to share a gentle reminder about the importance of supporting student safety during arrival and dismissal times, as well as in the hour or so afterward.
Last week, a situation after school served as a helpful reminder of the importance of reviewing safe travel routines with students. Please consider reviewing these safety tips with your child:
- Head straight home or to a pre-arranged location after school
- Stay with a trusted adult or group whenever possible
- Avoid conversations with unfamiliar adults or approaching unknown vehicles
If you ever notice anything unusual or have concerns, please feel free to reach out to us or contact local authorities. Thank you for your ongoing partnership in creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students.
Volunteer Tea
We’ve had many volunteers that have supported us in a variety of ways – from preparing classroom materials to attending field trips. We would like to honor you at our upcoming Volunteer Tea. Save the date and time: Thursday, May 22 10:30 – 12:00. To help us plan, please take a moment to complete this short RSVP survey—even if you’re unable to attend.
New Bell Times
As a reminder, starting in the 2025–2026 school year, our school’s bell times will change due to a new provincial law that changes how transportation eligibility is calculated. This has increased the number of students qualifying for yellow school bus service, prompting the CBE to adjust routes and school schedules.
It’s expected that 40 additional schools will qualify for bus service next year, we will find out later this month if Sunnyside School is one of them.
Our new bell times will be:
- Entry: 9:06 AM
- Dismissal (Mon–Thurs): 3:39 PM
- Dismissal (Fridays): 1:09 PM
We are currently finalizing lunch, recess, and kindergarten mid-day schedules and expect to share more details at the May School Council meeting and in upcoming weekly messages. For more information, visit the CBE FAQ page: CBE Bell Times FAQ
If you have questions not covered in the FAQs, please submit them using the form below, and I will do my best address them: https://forms.office.com/r/jAryiUV8gq
Warm regards,
Ms. Muir
