Dear Sunnyside School Community
The first week of school is always full of both excitement and adjustment. Many students arrive eager to reconnect with friends and dive into new learning, while others are still finding their rhythm as they get used to new classrooms, teachers, and routines. These transitions are all part of the back-to-school season, and with each passing day, students grow more comfortable and confident in their new routines.
Fire Drills
All schools are required to hold six fire drills each year to ensure that students and staff know what to do in an emergency. Some drills are announced in advance so that teachers can prepare students and practice calmly, while others are unannounced later in the year to help everyone respond as they would in a real situation. We understand that fire drills can sometimes cause worry for students, especially when they are unexpected. If your child feels nervous about fire drills, please let their teacher know so we can work together to make any arrangements that will help them feel safe and supported. We will have our first fire drill of the school year this Tuesday afternoon.
Fridays
On Fridays, students will have a 20-minute outdoor recess (compared to 15 minutes Monday–Thursday) along with an in-class opportunity for a nutrition break instead of a full lunch period. This schedule helps us balance Alberta Education’s required instructional minutes with students’ needs for food and movement. We encourage families to pack snacks that are easy to eat in the classroom, as students will not have the same extended lunch period on Fridays.
Kindergarten Toy Donations
Our Kindergarten team is currently seeking donations of gently used toys to support play-based learning in the classroom. Items such as building blocks, puzzles, dolls, play kitchens, cars, and imaginative play sets are especially welcome. If you have toys at home that your family has outgrown and are still in good condition, we would greatly appreciate your contribution. Donations can be dropped off at the school office. Thank you for helping us create a fun and engaging learning environment for our youngest students!
Busing
School busing for the year is now underway! If your child requires transportation, families must register through your MyCBE account.
Terry Fox
Sunnyside School students will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 26 at 9:30 a.m. This year marks the 45th anniversary of Terry’s inspiring Marathon of Hope, and the 2025 slogan is “Finish It!” in support of cancer research. In accordance with Canada’s anti-spam law, a separate email will be sent regarding donations.
Kindergarten students are welcome to join the run as well—we ask that families bring their child at 9:30 a.m. and stay to run alongside them. Mrs. Boyer is also looking for parent volunteers to help on the morning of the event. If you are able to assist, please email her at kpboyer@cbe.ab.ca.
Warmly,
Shannon Muir
