Dear Sunnyside School Families,

The Calgary Board of Education is preparing for an Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) strike beginning Monday, Oct. 6. On this date, all classes will be cancelled and students are asked not to attend school. ATA staff, including principals, will not report to work.

Students will continue to have access to Google Classroom during job action; however, teachers will not be available to post, monitor, or assess work. Teachers and Principals will not have access to their CBE accounts, including email. I will provide you with updates as soon as possible, however, we encourage you to visit the labour action page on the CBE website for ongoing updates.

Non-ATA Staff and School Operations

Secretaries, Educational Assistants, Lunchroom Supervisors, Librarians, and Facility Operators will continue to be at work during this time. I also want to let you know that Caterina, who has been supporting us in the office since the start of the year, has suddenly taken ill and will be away for health reasons. We are arranging for a substitute to cover next week; however, please note that a substitute may not have the necessary access to check sunnyside@cbe.ab.ca. For any matters that cannot wait until regular operations resume, we ask that you call the school directly at 403-777-6390.

Read-a-Thon

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the School Council meeting last night. We are excited to announce a Read-a-Thon—a fun and rewarding event that will help keep students engaged during the strike, encourage a love of reading, and raise funds for our school library!

How it works:

  • Students are encouraged to set a personal reading goal, such as the number of minutes read, books completed, or pledges collected.
  • They will gather pledges from family, friends, and neighbors who want to support their reading efforts and help raise funds for our school.
  • Students will track their reading minutes using the reading log provided.

What you’ll receive:
Today, your child will bring home two separate forms:

  1. A Reading Log to record minutes read or books completed. Sunnyside Reads: Save Our Shelves - Student Log
  2. A Pledge Sheet to collect donations from supporters. Neutral Boho Hearts Student Sign In Sheet

Important details:

  • Please return both the pledge sheets and reading logs by the end of October (date to be confirmed).
  • Prizes will be awarded to students for both reading achievements and fundraising efforts!

How the funds help:
All money raised will go toward purchasing new library books tailored to student interests, creating cozy reading spaces, and adding flexible seating to make our library a welcoming place for all students.

We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to read and help our library grow. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Happy reading!
