Dear Sunnyside School Families,

As December unfolds and the colder weather settles in, we have many exciting events and important reminders to share with our school community! From outdoor learning and festive activities to upcoming registration and special projects, there’s plenty to look forward to as we finish the year together.

Note: Two emails will be sent today. This email contains general school updates and seasonal information. A separate email, sent individually to comply with anti-spam legislation, will include details about fundraisers and fun lunches. If you happen to miss an update, don’t worry—all emails and event information will also be posted on the Sunnyside School website.

Colder Weather

The colder weather has officially arrived! As a friendly reminder, students continue to go outside during movement and nutrition breaks whenever the temperature is above –20°C. Many classes also enjoy daily outdoor learning activities. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather each day so they can stay comfortable and make the most of their learning time.

Cold and Flu Season

With cold and flu season upon us, we also ask families to have a back-up plan in case a child becomes ill or needs to be picked up during the day. When children aren’t feeling their best, staying home to rest can help them recover more comfortably. If a child begins to feel unwell during the school day, we’ll simply reach out to families so we can decide on the best next steps. We truly appreciate your partnership in keeping our school a healthy and supportive place for everyone.

Kindergarten Registration

Beginning Jan. 12, 2026, registration opens for kindergarten

Children are eligible for kindergarten in September 2026 if they turn five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2026.

Our Kindergarten Registration Guide can help you prepare with information: https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/kindergarten/Documents/Kindergarten-Registration-Guide.pdf

Spirit Week - Festive Dress

Save the Date: December 15–19

From December 15–19, we’ll be celebrating the season with a Festive Dress Week! Students, staff and families are invited to join in by wearing cozy and wintery clothing, fun or patterned sweaters, hats, scarves, or layers in seasonal colors like red, green, blue, white, or silver. You can also add winter-inspired touches like snowflakes, sparkles, or other cheerful accessories. Participation is completely optional—just a fun way to bring extra warmth and brightness to our school community.

From December 15–18, 3:10–3:30 p.m. in the gym, we’ll be gathering to sing seasonal and festive songs—and you’re invited to join! If you have a family favorite, send it our way and we’ll do our best to add it to the playlist. Come share in the music and seasonal cheer!

We’re grateful for your continued support and partnership in keeping our students healthy, engaged, and warmly connected to our school community. Enjoy the season, dress cozy, join in the festive fun, and we look forward to seeing all the creativity, cheer, and learning that December brings!

Warmly,
