Dear Sunnyside School Families,
Thank you to all of the families who joined us for Parent-Teacher Conferences. We appreciate the time you took to connect with us and to support your child’s learning. As always, you are welcome to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher at any time if you have questions or would like an update on their progress. Our next formal reporting opportunity will be on February 24, when report cards will be available through MyCBE.
Snow Toys and Forts
With the arrival of winter weather, students have been enjoying snow play during recess. To help keep play safe and manageable, we ask families not to send snow toys or equipment from home. The school provides opportunities for safe outdoor play, and keeping personal items at home helps prevent loss, damage, and potential conflicts.
Recently, we have had a few disagreements among students regarding snow forts and when they are accidentally or intentionally knocked down. If this comes up in conversation at home, please know that we are encouraging students to respect others’ forts and avoid damaging them. At the same time, it can sometimes be challenging for students to distinguish between a fort and a snow pile, and misunderstandings can occur.
Staff are actively supporting students by facilitating conversations during recess, reinforcing expectations during class, and incorporating related teaching and learning into physical education lessons. Thank you for helping us create a positive and enjoyable winter experience for all students.
Friendology – URSTRONG Social Emotional Learning
We are excited to share that we have recently joined the URSTRONG Schools community. URSTRONG focuses on empowering children with essential friendship skills while also providing the adults in their lives—both parents and teachers—with a common language to support them. Students learn what is normal in friendships, how to recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and how to stand up for themselves using kid-friendly strategies. In December, students will be learning about their Inner Ninja - to create healthy friendships, we need students to first look inward and treat themselves like a best friend. These sessions are focused on self-compassion and teaching students ways to treat themselves like a best friend. More information can be found here: https://urstrong.com/
Bottle Drive – Trickster Theatre
The results are in – the grade 1,2 hosted a bottle drive in November to raise funds for the Trickster Residency in May. Proceeds from the bottle drive were $419.50 - a very close second to the grade 5,6 bottle drive in September, which raised $424. We are working to raise as much of $5200 as possible.
