Weekly Message September 14, 2026

Dear Sunnyside School Families, 

Thank you to all of the families who joined us at the Welcome Back BBQ and School Council meeting! It was wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces, connect with families, and begin the year together as a community. A special thank you to our School Council and Fundraising Society for hosting the BBQ and helping make the evening such a warm and welcoming start to the school year. We truly appreciate everyone who took the time to join us! 

Keeping Our School Community Safe 

Thank you for helping us make arrival and dismissal safe and welcoming for everyone. As a reminder, bikes and scooters should be walked while on school property. We also ask families to ensure that children arrive and are picked up within our designated supervision times, as staff are not available to supervise students before or after these times. Thank you for helping us create a safe and caring environment for all of our students and families. 

Ready for Outdoor Play 

Our students spend lots of time learning and playing outdoors, and we want them to be comfortable and ready to enjoy it! As we move into fall, please send your child to school dressed for changing weather, including layers for those cooler mornings. We also recommend keeping a complete change of clothes, including extra socks, in your child’s backpack in case they get wet or messy during the day. Please label jackets, hoodies, water bottles and other belongings—our lost-and-found tends to grow quickly!  

School Visitors 

To help keep our school safe and welcoming, we ask that all adults visiting during the school day check in at the office and wear a visitor badge while in the building or on school grounds. This helps students and staff easily identify adults who have been welcomed and checked in by the school. We also ask families to arrange visits through the office rather than approaching students during recess or instructional time. Please share this information with any other caregivers who may be dropping off or picking up your child, so that everyone is familiar with our school routines and expectations.  

Staying Connected 

We are grateful for the strong partnership between our families and school staff. Good communication helps us better understand and support our students, and we encourage families to reach out when they have questions, wonderings or concerns. When possible, connecting first with the staff member closest to the situation is often the best place to start, as they know your child and the day-to-day context. Our teachers and staff value these conversations, and the office and administration are always available to help when additional support is needed. We appreciate the trust and partnership that families bring to our school community.  

Annual Sharing of AR6031, AR6005 and AR6006 

As part of the CBE’s annual communication with families, all CBE schools share the following administrative regulations: AR6031, AR6005 and AR6006. These regulations provide families with important information about expectations, processes and responsibilities within CBE schools. We encourage families to review these documents as part of our ongoing commitment to clear communication and strong partnerships between home and school.

Provincial Literacy and Numeracy Screening 

This year, Alberta Education requires literacy and numeracy screening for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. Grades 1–5 will participate September 14 – October 2, while Kindergarten screening will take place in January. These screeners provide teachers with additional information about students’ strengths and areas for growth and are one piece of our broader assessment practices. We will use this information to help guide instruction and support student learning while maintaining a positive, encouraging learning environment for all students.  

Supporting Your Child’s Well-Being: Family Learning Series 

The CBE invites all parents and guardians to join us for a live online series focused on supporting child and youth well-being. Hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with experts from the Calgary community, this year's sessions will explore a range of timely topics. 

These sessions are free and provide information, resources, helplines, and services to support healthy child and youth development.

Terry Fox 

Sunnyside School students will be participating in the Terry Fox Run Monday, September 28th at 3:00 pm. Students will gather in the gym and then come out to run shortly after. The Terry Fox Run supports cancer research and will be celebrating its 46th anniversary this year. Through Terry's extraordinary courage, determination, and belief that one person can make a difference, students learn that they, too, have the power to create positive change in their communities and beyond. We can't wait to see the creativity, passion, and school spirit Sunnyside School brings to this year's event! If you wish to donate, you can click the link here https://schools.terryfox.ca/SunnysideSchoolCalgary  or simply send a ’Toonie for Terry!’  We are hoping to raise $1000! Any families are welcome to join on the school field and cheer on! We are looking for parent volunteers to arrive at 2:30pm and stay for the event (until 3:45pm). Orange Shirt Day Assembly 

Sunnyside Elementary invites parents and caregivers to join us for our Orange Shirt Day Assembly on September 29 at 11:35 a.m. in the gym. This important day gives us an opportunity to recognize the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, honour Survivors, and reflect on the importance of reconciliation. We welcome families to gather with our school community as we learn, listen, and show our commitment to creating a caring and inclusive future for all children.
