Dear Sunnyside Families,

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Halloween Dance last Thursday! It was wonderful to see so many families come together to enjoy an evening of music, costumes and community. A special thank you to our School Council and volunteers who helped make the evening possible. We appreciate the time and effort that went into creating such a fun event for our students and families.

As we welcome November, this is a busy time of year in schools, and it provides many opportunities to reflect on the importance of community, kindness, learning and the relationships that help our students thrive.

Kindness, Belonging and Positive Relationships

At Sunnyside, we continue to place a strong emphasis on creating a school community where everyone feels welcome, valued and connected. The small, everyday actions we take to include others, show kindness and look out for one another make a meaningful difference.

We will continue to recognize acts of kindness through our Kindness Cards. These are an opportunity to celebrate not only the big gestures, but also the thoughtful words, helpful actions and inclusive choices that contribute to a positive school environment.

If you would like to support at home, you might consider asking your child: What is one thing you did this week that helped someone feel included or supported? Did you fill in a Kindness Card for yourself or someone else?

Student Learning and Assessment

We know families are interested in understanding how their children are progressing in literacy and numeracy. Alberta's literacy and numeracy screening requirements provide teachers with additional information about student learning and help identify areas where further instruction or support may be beneficial.

It is important to remember that screening results provide one snapshot of learning. They complement, rather than replace, the ongoing classroom assessments, observations and conversations teachers use to understand each student's progress.

The CBE has developed helpful parent resources to support families in understanding the screening process and results. These can be found on the CBE Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting webpage.

We recognize that families may have questions about how to interpret their child's  literacy and numeracy screening results and what the results mean for their learning.  We understand that families may be looking for more information about what the results mean and how they are used. As Alberta Education and Childcare continues to provide additional guidance and resources, we will share relevant information with families to  help build a clearer understanding of the screening process and results.

Remembering and Reflecting

As we approach Remembrance Day, students will have opportunities to learn about the significance of November 11 and reflect on the courage, service and sacrifices of those who have served our country.

Our school community will come together for our Remembrance Day assembly on Tuesday, November 10 at 10:45. If you would like to join us, please arrive between 10:30 - 10:40am. We are also grateful to families who have shared photographs, stories, letters and traditions connected to military service and peacekeeping. Ms. Lang will be accepting submissions until Tuesday, November 3rd. You can email here at smlang@cbe.ab.ca. These personal connections help make remembrance meaningful for our students.

Families looking for additional ways to explore Remembrance Day together may wish to visit Veterans Affairs Canada's Learning Resources. The site includes age-appropriate activities, videos, stories and classroom resources.

Our School Community

A strong school community is built through the contributions of many people. We appreciate the ongoing support of our School Council, volunteers and families who contribute their time, ideas and energy to make Sunnyside a welcoming place for students.

Whether it is supporting a school event, participating in a conversation about learning or simply taking a moment to connect with another family, these contributions help strengthen the relationships that make our school special. Thank you for being part of our community.

Please help get the word out: There are still some spaces and backup spaces to fill for the Casino Fundraising Event. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E44A4A72CA5F5C34-64176742-casino?useFullSite=true#/

Looking Ahead: Fall Break

A reminder that Tuesday, November 10 will be our last instructional day before Fall Break. There will be no classes from November 11–13, and students will return to school on Monday, November 16.

As the weather continues to change, please help your child come prepared for outdoor learning and play with appropriate clothing, including warm layers, mittens and a hat. We appreciate your support in helping students remain comfortable and ready to enjoy their time outdoors.

For a complete overview of the school year, families can also refer to the CBE 2026–2027 Instructional Calendarand to our School Calendar.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for all the ways you contribute to our school community. I look forward to another wonderful week of learning, connection and kindness at Sunnyside.

Warmly,

Shannon Muir
