Upcoming Dates

Dear Sunnyside School Families,

A sincere thank you to our many volunteers, as well as the Activity Day Committee, School Council, and Fundraising Society, for their time, effort, and ongoing contributions in making Activity Day a success, including the meaningful addition of the round dance and drumming, which was a highlight for our school community.

Diversity Cup Soccer Tournament

Congratulations to our Sunnyside Diversity Cup participants!

Students demonstrated excellent teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit throughout the weekend while representing Sunnyside with pride. Thank you to our families, staff, and school council representatives for helping make this a wonderful experience for our students.

A medal ceremony will be held at school during our Farewell Assembly on June 25.

Neighbour Day Parade

We are excited to share that Sunnyside School students will be participating in the Sunnyside Neighbour Day community parade. Neighbour Day is a city-wide celebration held annually on the third Saturday in June that brings Calgarians together to build connections, strengthen community spirit, and celebrate belonging in our neighbourhoods.

Students who are attending are invited to walk together as part of the Sunnyside group and carry the school banner during the parade. Our Diversity Cup soccer team is also welcome to wear their Sunnyside School shirts to help represent our school within this broader community celebration.

We are looking forward to joining other community members in this meaningful event and celebrating the strong sense of connection that makes our neighbourhood special.

  • Sunnyside Community Neighbor Day Parade is on Saturday June 20. Families are invited to meet at 1pm at Violet King Park with the parade commencing at 2:00 PM.

Indigenous Day Assembly

To recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day, Sunnyside School will be holding a school assembly on June 19 at 10:00 AM. The assembly will include a Land Acknowledgement led by Kindergarten and Grade 3/4 students, a Celebration of Outdoor Learning at Sunnyside video, and a whole-school performance of the Sunnyside School song.

We will also share a message from an Elder in recognition of the Summer Solstice and National Indigenous Peoples Day, as well as class word clouds highlighting student learning. The assembly will conclude with a performance of Proud Like a Mountain led by Grade 3/4 students and Mr. Millar. Families are welcome to join.

Farewell Assembly and Staffing

This year, we will be saying farewell to Mr. Millar as he embarks on new teaching opportunities within the Calgary Board of Education after nearly 15 years of dedicated service to Sunnyside School. He will be greatly missed by students, staff, and families, and we are deeply grateful for the many contributions he has made to our school community over the years. We wish him every success and happiness in this next chapter.

We are also excited to welcome two experienced and highly dedicated teachers to Sunnyside in September 2026. We look forward to introducing them to our community at our Open House on Thursday, August 27 from 2:00–3:00 PM, where families will have the opportunity to meet them and learn more about the year ahead.

Warmly,
Shannon Muir
